How To Conduct Market Research for Small Business, Braeden Rhys
How To Conduct Market Research, Braeden Rhys

Let’s be honest: most people hear the words "market research" and immediately want to fake their own disappearance. It sounds like something only suited to boardrooms, beige PowerPoints, and consultants who charge $10k to tell you what Google Trends could've. But if you do it right (read: not like your competitors), market research becomes a jetpack, not a paperweight.

And no, I’m not talking about hiring a focus group of Karen’s from accounting.

I’m talking about real, actionable, unapologetically YOU market research that gets you in front of the right people, saying the right things, and selling the right way.

Why Market Research Still Matters (Yes, Even for You)

Here’s the truth: if you skip market research, you’re not brave—you’re blind. You’re guessing. And while gambling might be fun in Vegas, it’s a terrible business strategy.

Market research helps you:

  • Stop assuming. Just because YOU love your product doesn’t mean your market does.

  • Find your actual audience. Not just the one you think you have.

  • Discover gaps and opportunities. You can’t fill a need you don’t know exists.

My First Real Market Research Lesson

Back when I launched my second business (spoiler: not everything went to plan), I thought I knew my audience inside out. But I was dead wrong. I ran ads, got clicks, and... crickets. After burning through money and pride, I decided to do it properly: surveys, social listening, competitor audits, customer interviews.

What I found?

My REAL audience wasn’t who I was targeting at all.

So I pivoted.

Sales doubled in 90 days.

Boom.

How to Conduct Market Research Like a Boss

1. Start With Your Gut (Then Prove It Wrong)

Write down what you THINK your audience wants, where they hang out, and what they care about. Then go and test every assumption.

2. Ask, Don’t Assume

Use Google Forms, Typeform, or even a cheeky Instagram poll to ask real humans questions like:

  • What problem are you trying to solve?

  • Where do you normally shop for [product/service]?

  • What do you wish existed that doesn’t?

3. Stalk Your Competitors (In a Cool Way)

Check their reviews, socials, websites.

What are people loving?

Complaining about?

Where are the gaps you could fill with YOUR brand voice and superpower?

4. Hang Where Your People Hang

Facebook groups, Reddit threads, TikTok comments, goldmines of unfiltered truth.

Listen more than you talk.

5. Don’t Just Gather Info—ACT ON IT

Too many people collect data like hoarders and never use it.

Turn it into real changes: tweak your offer, your message, your pricing, your channels.

Quick Wins for Market Research Newbies

  • Add 3 survey questions to your email newsletter this week.

  • Run a 15-minute phone call with your top 5 customers.

  • Record what your competitors are doing for 7 days. Then do the opposite (but better).

Final Thoughts

Conducting market research isn’t about playing it safe—it’s about playing it SMART. It’s about showing up with intention, intelligence, and insight. And if you do it the Braeden Rhys way? It’s actually... kinda sexy.
