Competitor Research: Why You Can’t Compete If You Don’t Understand the Game

Because copying them won’t make you them - it’ll just make you invisible.
Let’s get one thing straight:
If your entire strategy is watching what your competitors are doing and trying to do it slightly better - you’ve already lost.
I’ve met too many entrepreneurs who scroll their way into stagnation. They look at what others in their industry are doing, slap on a similar price point, tweak a colour or two, and call it “branding.” Babe… no. That’s not strategy. That’s digital plagiarism with a filter.
True competitor research is about understanding the landscape so you can stand out, not blend in.
The Trap of Copy-Paste Marketing
I once worked with a luxury skincare brand that mirrored a competitor’s entire product positioning - copy, pricing, even photography style.
The problem? They weren’t that brand.
Their founder’s story was stronger.
Their product formulation was better.
But because they buried their brilliance under “what’s working for someone else,” they became forgettable.
We threw out the clone strategy, built something authentic, and they doubled revenue in 6 months.
Competitor research isn’t about imitation. It’s about insight.
So… What Is Smart Competitor Research?
Here’s how I approach it in my consulting work and what you should be doing too:
1. Spot the Gaps
Where are your competitors failing to deliver?
What are customers complaining about in reviews, forums, Reddit threads?
👉 This is where you step in.
2. Decode Their Positioning
What are they claiming?
Luxury?
Convenience?
Social justice?
What language are they using?
What aren’t they saying?
👉 This shows you how to craft a message that actually cuts through.
3. Analyse Their Offers, Not Just Prices
Are they selling one-size-fits-all? Are they undercutting the market? Are they bundling for value?
👉 You don’t have to be cheaper. You have to be smarter.
4. Observe Their Weaknesses
Crappy customer service? Slow delivery? Overused influencer marketing?
👉 Their weakness = your window of opportunity.
Real Talk: You’re Not Their Clone. Stop Acting Like One.
Look - I get it. It’s tempting to lean on what “seems to work.” Especially when you’re just starting or you’re stuck.
But I’ve been in this game long enough to tell you this:
No brand ever made it big by trying to be someone else.
I’ve had clients in the adult industry, hospitality, retail, even SaaS - all of them growing faster when they finally stopped mimicking the market and started owning their difference.
And you want to know what unlocked that?
🔍 Strategic competitor research.
Braeden’s Method: Competitor Research That Drives Growth
When I work with clients on this, we don’t do it the lazy way.
Here’s what we dig into:
Customer Sentiment Mapping What’s the vibe? What are people really feeling?
Marketing Funnel Review Where are your competitors converting — or leaking?
Keyword Gaps Where can you dominate in search?
Social Listening What’s being said, what’s being skipped, and what’s screaming to be done better?
Unique Value Proposition Deep-Dive We pull your authentic difference out and make it undeniable.
You Can’t Outsmart the Market Blindfolded
If you want to grow, scale, and dominate - you need to know:
Who your competitors really are
What they’re doing right
What they’re doing wrong
And how to position yourself where they can’t touch you
This is business growth strategy, not just a “nice to know.”
And if you’re too scared to look someone else will.
And they’ll beat you.
